What is Botox?

Botox is a Botulinum toxin type A, a substance produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacillus.

What is the history of Botox?

In 1950 Dr. Vemon Brooks discovered that BTX-A (Type A Botulin Toxin Α) blocks the release of acetylcholine from neurotransmitters to muscles, resulting in temporary muscle inactivation. In 1978, ophthalmologist Dr. Scott received approval from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to use BTX-A for treating strabismus in a group of volunteers. In 1980, Allergan Inc. acquired Dr. Scott’s rights to distribute BTX-A, and in 1989 received FDA approval for the treatment of many conditions associated with muscular dystonias, such as strabismus and blepharospasm. Following FDA approval, the preparation was named Botox, a brand name still valid, which has become one of the strongest in the globe.

What is Dysport?

Dysport contains type A Botulinum toxin (abobotulinumtoxinA) and is produced by British company Ipsen Biopharm Ltd; it was approved by the FDA in 2009.

What about Botox today?

Today Botox has been officially approved by competent authorities in more than 80 countries of the world and it is used by various medical specialists to treat conditions entailing muscular dystonias.

What is Vistabel?

It is a new brand name of a Botox preparation. Under this new name, it has been officially approved to treat wrinkles of expression in more than 36 countries.

How safe is Botox treatment?

The use of Botox for longer than 20 years by 8 different medical specialties has proven that it is safe even when the amount used by far exceeds what is necessary to manage wrinkles due to facial expression.

How does Botox work?

Botox injections into the muscle that creates the wrinkle block the release of acetylcholine from nerve endings, and so they can no longer cause intense muscle contraction. This makes wrinkles of expression caused by muscular contraction disappear.

Which wrinkles disappear with the use of Botox?

Botox is ideal for frown lines, forehead furrows, crow’s feet, lip lines and bunny lines.

What is the Botox procedure like and how long does it last?

The treatment session lasts about 10 minutes. Using a small needle, a minimal quantity of Botox is injected into various points of the face. Pain is minimal and instantaneous and rarely is it necessary to use an anaesthetic cream. Botox quantity and exact application points are individualised depending on the needs of each person.

When are Botox results visible and how long do they last?

Results appear gradually after 24 to 48 hours and are completed after two weeks have elapsed. Duration of Botox treatment results depends on the metabolism of each person and ranges from 4 to 7 months.

How often should Botox be applied?

In the first year, Botox injections can be repeated every 4 months; after the second year, however, treatment usually takes place twice a year.

What complications might occur?

Botox complications are minor and temporary. After the treatment a headache might appear for a few hours. There is a small likelihood of bruising due to needle pricks. Persons who take aspirins or blood diluting medication are more likely to present bruising. Such medication should, if possible, be avoided before Botox treatment.

Are there any contra-indications?

Botox treatment is contra-indicated for persons with myopathies. They should also be avoided in pregnant women and in breast-feeding mothers.

Botox for Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Botox inhibits the activation of sweat glands and reduces perspiration. The treatment of excessive sweating with Botox is ideal and effective in all forms of the condition. This is why it is the treatment of choice for sweaty palms and feet (palmar / plantar hyperhidrosis) and sweaty armpits (axillary hyperhidrosis). Results last for about 6 months. It has been noted that after numerous applications, the effects last longer.

Botox for migraines?

Recent studies have indicated that in patients with chronic migraines (i.e. lasting longer than 15 days a month) Botox reduces (does not eradicate) their migraines.

Can I prevent wrinkles appearing through Botox application?

When the first signs of intense involuntary movement of facial muscles appear, we can prevent new wrinkles from forming with the use of Botox and maintain a youthful facial look for many years.

Is it likely that Botox might have no effect?

Some patients may rarely become resistant to the medication or the medication may become less effective with time. In such cases it helps to move from one preparation to the other (from Botox to Dysport or vice-versa).

What other treatment can be combined with Botox?

In our practice, Botox is often combined with hyaluronic acid to correct wrinkles in the two lower thirds of the face or with face-neck mesotherapy.
